February 2022 - FINALLY ON THE ROAD AGAIN!

We finally got the motorhome back from all the hail damage repair (minus the awning which is backordered), the windshield replaced, and the oil change/other service.  We left on February 12th, and this trip is very different from years past.

We are not deadheading anywhere.  250 miles is a very long day for us.  We're stopping to enjoy things!

So, we left Dawsonville and went as far as Opelika, and then stopped for a night at a casino RV park in Alabama (terrible place - none of the sites were level!), and then spent 5 nights in Biloxi. We stayed at Parker's Landing, and we'd stay there again.  Biloxi was great, and we at a lot of seafood!!  Yum!

We drove from there to Hammond, LA and stayed at a great Passport America campground called Hidden Oaks.  We'll be back there.  It was very charming - lots of full timers there but they had little cabins along the river.  It had the feeling of a fish camp. And they had peacocks!  We woke up one morning and thought there was a cat trapped in the bin under the bed, but it turns out that's what peacocks sound like!!

The next stop was at other fish camp RV park in Breux Bridge, and we stayed there 2 nights, also a Passport America park.  Mike got some kind of stomach bug, so we didn't go to a Harvest Host golf course like we were supposed to.

From there, we went to just west of Shreveport, and stayed one night.  Then we headed to Canton, TX, and the plan was to stay 2 nights so we could visit with Janet and Roy Friend (they moved to Mineola).  We met them for lunch, and then an ice storm moved in, and we were iced in and FREEZING for 3 nights.  We had a good visit with Janet and Roy, but I didn't think to take a picture of the 4 of us.

Then we went to just south of Waco, to a little town called Gatesville.  Another Passport America park, only $15 a night - and that's all it was worth.  Nothing charming about it, but I wanted to go see the Magnolia silos in Waco (Chip and Joanne Gaines - Fixer Upper).  The weather was so crappy on Saturday, that we decided to go Sunday.  BUT THEY"RE CLOSED ON SUNDAY 😔  So, that was a bust, but I did get some pictures.  Next time, we'll plan better!

From there, we headed to Fredricksburg, TX.  This is a cute little German town in the hill country that we drove through two years ago when we went to Lukenbach.  We vowed to come back, and we've been here 4 nights.  We had a great German lunch, and Mike is golfing today at the Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Golf Course.  Cute town.  We're staying at the Vineyards RV Park, and this is a great place. We'd come back here again. I wouldn't mind spending a month or so here.

Biergarten in Fredricksburg

Lots of wineries - wine barrels on Main street

Of course we went to Luckenbach

City Library - I love the Texas Limestone

Yesterday we went to the Tunnel State Park.  It's a park where the old railroad tunnel (the rail went from Fredricksburg to San Antonio back in the day.  It's home to thousands of migrating Mexican bats - they come back in May and leave in September. (Much like Carlsbad Caverns). We enjoyed a short hike on a nature trail that ran along the old railroad bed.  They have benches so people can watch the bats leave at night.  It must be an awesome sight!

Tomorrow we start heading toward Benson, AZ where we'll stay for a couple of days so we can see Kathie and Cliff Sklenar.  It'll be nice to see them again.
